Myers Motors of Tallmadge unveiling 2-seater electric vehicle - Cleveland Plain Dealer Posted: 22 Sep 2009 09:04 PM PDT By Robert SchoenbergerSeptember 23, 2009, 12:01AM "We're going to start taking pre-orders next month," company owner Dana Myers said. "We believe we are going to be shipping vehicles before the end of next year." The Myers two-seater Price: Under $30,000 Range: 60 miles Made in: Tallmadge Sales: Pre-orders start in October. Sales start late next year. Name: Myers will start a contest on its Web site, myersmotors.com, starting Oct. 1 to name the car. Like the single-passenger NmG (no more gas) now on sale, the new two-seat model will cost a little less than $30,000 and be able to go 60 miles on a charge. Myers said the company is considering pricing options that would allow customers pay more for a 100-mile range or less for 40 miles. He added that he expects to hire as many as 50 people in Tallmadge by late next year to build the vehicles. If sales are good, he envisions hundreds of workers within a few years. Myers got into the electric car business in 2003 when it bought the Sparrow electric car business from bankrupt Corbin Motors. It was the only company selling an electric vehicle capable of highway speeds. But he said that soon after buying the company, he realized the Corbin design was horribly flawed. The electrical system didn't work very well, and the car was extremely difficult to build. Each vehicle effectively had to be built by hand. Plans to mass-produce the car and bring its price down into the $15,000 to $20,000 range fell apart. Over the past six years, Myers has replaced the vehicle's electrical system and studied ways to mass-produce the car. Earlier this year, Cleveland nonprofit JumpStart Inc. invested $250,000 in Myers Motors to help pay for the final design work on the two-seat model. Like the NmG, the two-seat version, which so far has not been named, will be considered a motorcycle for licensing and safety laws. It looks similar to the NmG, but there are several striking differences. "If you're going down the road at night, you don't want people to think, 'Oh, this is just a thin motorcycle,' " Myers said. And along with the wider body, the new car has more car-like sides. Cutaways on the fenders are similar to those on the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Focus. "We wanted something that still looks unique and looks fun," Myers said. "I just always thought having fenders out there gave a car a distinctive style." The more rounded body also gives the new vehicle a hatchback-style rear end. The NmG's trunk is large enough for a single suitcase or two bags of groceries. The new model should have significantly more space, Myers said. That could mean carrying more weight. But even with two passengers and luggage, Myers said he's confident the car will be able to hit its 60-mile range. "We're doing better than that right now," he said. For years, Myers has defended the single-passenger NmG as a practical commuting vehicle, something large enough to get drivers to and from work. Erich Merkle, owner of automotive research and consulting company Autoconomy.com, said adding that extra seat adds a lot of practicality to the electric vehicle, but not as much as most drivers want. "Even gasoline-powered two-seat vehicles are niche vehicles," Merkle said. Vehicles like the Corvette and the Mazda MX-5 have loyal followings, but their sales are low compared with almost any four-seat car, he added. Myers said he isn't expecting to outsell the Toyota Camry anytime soon. Getting up to 10,000 sales a year would be a major accomplishment. But eventually, he said he expects electric vehicles to become the norm for daily transportation.

CP ploughs ahead with plant project - Bangkok Post Posted: 22 Sep 2009 07:24 PM PDT RUBBER CP ploughs ahead with plant project
The Charoen Pokphand Group will resume talks with Japan's Marubeni Corporation for a plan to set up a manufacturing plant to produce rubber products to supply the tyre industry. Mr Montri shows off a billboard advertising the properties of the high-yield hybrid JVP 80 rubber variety. CP plans to distribute 400,000 saplings this year and one million next year. The project is among several aggressive expansion plans the company has outlined for the near future in order to beef up its rubber business now that affiliate Charoen Pokphand Seeds Co has been cleared from corruption and malfeasance charges by the Supreme Court. "The court ruling is a relief to me and encouraged our group to pursue the rubber business aggressively," said Montri Congtrakultien, president of the CP Group's Crop Integration Business Group, which oversees CP's rubber business. On Monday, the Supreme Court acquitted 44 politicians, civil servants and businessmen of corruption and malfeasance charges in a 1.44-billion-baht rubber sapling procurement deal. The charges filed by the Assets Scrutiny Committee in 2006 had interrupted the planned investment of Marubeni and CP in the project to make high-quality rubber products such as compound rubber for the automotive tyre industry. "Now, we're more comfortable about raising the issue for talks," said Mr Montri. "We're also upbeat about continuing other investments in rubber-related industries such up setting up rubber-sheet production plants and bolstering the rubber-sapling business." Marubeni has rubber operations in several countries in Asia such as Indonesia and Malaysia, with more than one million tonnes traded each year.In Thailand, the Japanese trading house has a venture with the leading rubber exporter Thai Hua Rubber Plc to make block rubber products. It also controls a substantial stake in B-Quik, the country's largest automobile service chain. According to Mr Montri, a possible third party in the new joint-venture company is Japan's Starlanes, which has already been CP's partner in the fruit-exporting firm CP Starlanes and helped create the new investment. The company also plans to deliver rubber products to feed CP's automobile operations in China, where the group assembles passenger cars and motorcycles. "Rubber will become our core industry in the future and we expect about a 10% share in the country's exports in the next five years thanks to strong market demand," Mr Montri said. Rubber is a cash crop with high growth potential driven by strong demand from automobile industries in the fast-developing countries collectively known as BRIC - Brazil, Russia, India and China. Thailand generated 200 billion baht from the exports of approximately 2.7 million tonnes of rubber products last year. The 90 million rubber saplings are expected to add another 200,000 tonnes to the country's output in the next two years. CP also plans to distribute about 400,000 saplings of its hybrid JVP 80 rubber variety this year and one million by next year. Rubber now contributes just 5% to CP's Crop Integration Business Group, or an estimated 2.5 billion baht this year. Seward, Lincoln Tenneco plants unaffected by Cozad announcement - Lincoln Journal Star Posted: 22 Sep 2009 02:45 PM PDT While the news Tuesday was grim for 500 Tenneco employees in Cozad, the picture about 200 miles to the east looked much brighter. Tenneco's 500 employees in Seward and just over 100 in Lincoln will be unaffected by the closure of the plant in Cozad, a company spokeswoman said, and growth could be on the horizon for the Seward plant. Both the Lincoln and Seward operations make automotive exhaust products, while the Cozad plant makes shock absorbers. The Lincoln operation, which is located on the Lincoln Industries campus at 600 West E St., makes products specifically for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. There have been slowdowns and temporary layoffs in Lincoln due to cutbacks at Harley, said Tenneco spokeswoman Jane Ostrander. However, she said the company expects business to improve as the economy does. The Seward plant, which makes exhaust products for GM, Ford and other automakers, may be in line for expansion. "We're actually looking a t that plant for future growth opportunities," Ostrander said, although she declined to elaborate.
