Wuss Shows Beware, Sons of Anarchy will Kick Your Ass! - Salon

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 01:12 PM PDT

I normally wouldn't try to write a post about a TV show. There are others who are far more articulate about TV reviews (well, to be honest "articulate" is the word I would normally use. The word I would normally use is pretentious).

But, I just watched the 2nd episode of a show which is now in its 2nd season on FX and noticing that no one else has commented on it, I thought I would because it's worth a watch.

 sons_of_anarchy_art

The show I'm referring to is Sons of Anarchy which is aired on FX on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. Here's what the show's website has to say about it:

Sons of Anarchy, is an adrenalized drama with darkly comedic undertones that explores a notorious outlaw motorcycle club's (MC) desire to protect its livelihood while ensuring that their simple, sheltered town of Charming, California remains exactly that, Charming. The MC must confront threats from drug dealers, corporate developers, and overzealous law officers. Behind the MC's familial lifestyle and legally thriving automotive shop is a ruthless and illegally thriving arms business. The seduction of money, power, and blood.

This season Jax and the club deal with the fallout from Donna's death, bringing internal tensions to an all-time high while a new enemy takes root in Charming. LOAN, or League of American Nationalists, is a white separatist organization headed by Ethan Zobelle (Adam Arkin) with help from his lieutenant, AJ Weston (Henry Rollins). Zobelle, who opens a cigar shop on Main Street intent on ingratiating himself with the community and forcing SAMCRO out.

sons of anarchy pic Ron Katey sons-of-anarchy-charlie

Sons of Anarchy features an ensemble cast headed by Ron Perlman as the patriarch/President of the Club, Katey Sagal who plays his wife and de facto matriarch and Charlie Nunnam who plays Sagal's son, Perlman's stepson and the Vice President of the Club. These are 3 terrific actors who are joined by an interesting group of members of the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club as well as "out of character" guest stars.

This show is raw. As the weapons selling and delivery business has dried up from Federal pressure and as selling drugs is becoming a thing of the past for the Club (a sense of conscious in which Katey Sagal has a large role), the Club is taking on a new cottage industry—pornographic movies. They are rescuing a porn producer who was being driven out of business by a producer with heavy-handed methods played by Tom Arnold.

The Club has to vote on all enterprises and Perlman asks "We don't really need to vote on this do we?" as the other members laugh and guffaw about the prospects of setting up a studio in a warehouse owned by the group. "OK, everyone in favor of pussy, raise your hands." The result is predictable. (There goes one of Carlin's famous 7 words down the drain).

The Club is part Animal House, part gang and a lot family. As 2 of the members are assembling AK47s for sale to the "Mayans" gang, one member is down because his wife was recently murdered. The member assisting him gently tells him, "We're family. We've got each other. I'm here for you whenever you need to talk." Sounds kind of touchy feely doesn't it?

Well, so far in 2 shows there has been a contract murder, a confrontation with "aryan" extremists, a gang shoot-out, a violent rape, a "beatdown" with baseball bats and other assorted mayhem. But, family is family. These folks have more in common with the Sopranos than with the Brady bunch.

sonsofanarchy riding

This show is edgy, violent, profane, well written, well acted and pulls you in with eyes wide open in surprise, shock, a bit of revulsion and identification with the characters. Give it a watch. I bet you'll get hooked like me.

Classic cars strut their stuff - Akron Beacon Journal

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 10:56 AM PDT

Upscale car collectors from across the nation will roll into the prestigious Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles this weekend in Jackson Township.

For those who don't know, it's an event akin to the Pro Football Hall of Fame week in Stark County for car buffs.

The three-day event will honor Edsel B. Ford, the only son of Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford. Several of the cars that were owned by the man, who was president of the Ford Motor Company when he died at age 49, will be on display. Among those are a 1941 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet and two custom-built speedsters.

In addition, a 1938 Lincoln Brunn limousine, a 1934 Ford Brewster town car from the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House collection and an original, unrestored 1922 Hispano-Suiza touring car with coach work by Brunn will be in the show.

The younger Ford assisted in the creation of some remarkable automobiles built in the 1920s and '30s. Among the automobiles he was best known for influencing was the Lincoln Continental, making the scene in 1939.

David Schultz, executive director of the Glenmoor auto event, owns two vintage Lincolns. It seems Schultz, who has been involved with the Glenmoor Gathering for five of it's 15 years, got the car bug when he was just a tike ` following a visit to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan.

Today, his knowledge of vintage automobiles is both impressive and informative. Those who have a chance to talk with him are treated to a history lesson on the automobile.

The Glenmoor Gathering is gaining in prestige. Some of the same cars that are shown at places like the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, considered by some as the the world's premier celebration of the automobile, will be at Glenmoor. Only the rarest of automobiles are invited to participate.

This year, more than 200 cars will be parked on the beautiful grounds of Glenmoor Country Club, which boasts a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course.

''We are not a Pebble Beach yet, but we are in the top tier of concours events in the nation,'' explained Schultz.

Among the cars is an unprecedented grouping of 1934 Ford vintage hot rods.

''It's the first time these cars have been together east of the Mississippi,'' Schultz said.

Other highlights include:

- The giant-sized 1911 Oldsmobile Limited seven passenger touring vehicle. This rare car, which spent 80 years in storage, remains unrestored.

- American Classic custom-bodied automobiles, including a 1930 Duesenberg J convertible coupe by Hibbard & Darrin; a 1931 Chrysler Imperial convertible couple by LeBaron; a 1938 Cadillac V16 convertible coupe by Brunn, and a 1940 Packard convertible Victoria by Darrin.

- Cars from the 1920s through the early 1940s such as a 1932 Marmon V16 coupe, 1934 Packard Twelve convertible coupe and a 1934 Auburn V12 Salon convertible coupe.

- Two rare personality cars ` a 1932 Packard Twin Six roadster purchased new by film star Clark Gable and a 1929 Rolls-Royce Pall Mall tourier, originally owned by Howard Hughes (oh, if that car could talk).

- A group of early-American motorcycles, including a 1911 Indian, a 1917 Harley-Davidson J, a 1921 Indian Scout and a rare, unrestored, 1913 Flying Merkel.

In addition to the cars, there will be authors who write about cars and artists who specialize in automotive artwork.

Authors include Edsel Ford's biographer, Henry Dominguez, who wrote a book chronicling the special relationship between Ford and his company's first design chief, E.T. ''Bob'' Gregorie. Among the artists is Camilo Pardo, who just happens to be a former designer for the Ford Motor Company.

Sharing in the proceeds from the event will be Mercy Medical Center and University Hospital Rainbow Babies Children's Hospital.
