| Electric motorcycles? Company charges ahead - MSNBC Posted: 30 Oct 2009 03:16 AM PDT WASHINGTON - An Oregon company that makes electric motorcycles thinks it has a homegrown solution to the nation's energy woes. To prove it, the company sent two riders on a 10-day odyssey from Detroit to Washington, re-creating the 2008 trip of automobile company CEOs looking for billions of dollars in government aid. While the auto executives rode in corporate jets, the riders from Brammo Inc. had a far less luxurious journey. The chief engineer and an advertising executive for the Ashland, Ore.-based company rode more than 700 miles from Michigan in 45-mile increments — the distance the motorcycles can travel on one charge. The trip took so long in part because the riders stopped frequently to charge up and meet with the public and news media to draw attention to the all-electric Enertia, which sells for $12,000. The men tailgated with Pittsburgh Steelers fans, spoke to students at Carnegie Mellon University and battled autumn rains that soaked them through much of the journey. After they arrived in Washington, the riders and Brammo CEO Craig Bramscher met Tuesday with officials from the Energy Department and with lawmakers, including their home state senators. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said Brammo, which employs 52 people at its southwestern Oregon plant, was poised to become an economic driver for the state. The company is lobbying to extend an Energy Department grant program to include two-wheeled vehicles. It also wants to expand a 10-percent federal tax credit available to electric vehicle buyers under the economic stimulus law. The visit by the electric motorcycle riders comes as luxury automaker Fisker Automotive said Tuesday it was buying a shuttered General Motors assembly plant in Delaware to produce plug-in hybrid electric cars. Vice President Joe Biden was among those on hand to announce a new lease on life for the GM plant. On Thursday, Colorado-based Proterra will demonstrate an electric hybrid bus at a Capitol Hill news conference. The zero-emission bus uses lithium titanate batteries. The electric motorcycle riders documented their trip on a blog called "Shocking Barack" and promoted it through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. "We want to have a little fun," said David Schiff, one of the two riders. Schiff, creative director a Colorado-based advertising agency that is working with Brammo, dreamed up the trip and the Web site, http://www.shockingbarack.com, which he said is intended to impress Obama with the efficiency of electric motorcycles. A crew of six has been documenting the journey, with updated videos and diaries on the Web site and even a GPS-aided map showing the exact locations of the bikes being ridden by Schiff and Brian Wismann, Brammo's director of product development. "People have lost faith in America's ability to innovate and be scrappy and do a lot with a little," Schiff said. "We believe that we are riding two-wheeled evidence to the contrary." CEO Bramscher calls electric vehicles the wave of the future, and says that if the price of the bike can be brought down to about $9,000, the Enertia could become a popular commuter choice. | Obituary: Billie Loren Downard (Oct. 30) - Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted: 30 Oct 2009 12:10 AM PDT Aug. 23, 1941 - Oct. 23, 2009 Billie Loren Downard, 68, died Oct. 23, 2009, at his home in Philomath surrounded by family. He was born to Lee Roy and Dorothy Lorene Downard in Baxter Springs, Kan. He moved at a young ageto Eugene , where he grew up, made lifelong friends, and, in the early summer of 1959, met his true love, Donna Marie Tallman. This was about one month before he joined the U.S. Navy. The two were married on April 2, 1960. They had five children together: Cynthia, Bill, Loren, Michael and Melynda. He and a co-worker quit their jobs in 1972 and started their own automotive repair shop, Bug Werks, which is still in business today as Auto Werks. He had since remarried. He was loved by many, and will be missed. His hobbies were hunting, shooting, stock-car racing, off-road motorcycle riding, four-wheeling, camping, fishing, shooting the breeze and arm wrestling. Survivors include his children, Cynthia Sanchez of Vancouver, Wash., Bill and Linda Downard of Philomath, Loren and Sara Downard of Philomath, Michael Downard of Corvallis and Melynda Downard of Corvallis; and his first true love, Donna Downard. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Leroy and Jerry; his mother, Dorothy Lorene Downard; and his father, Lee Roy Downard. A potluck celebration of life gathering will take place Nov. 7 at Bill's house on College Street in Philomath, from noon until we're done. It-this magazine, to remove any doubt-is the fountainhead of a publishing empire; many of Source Interlink's esteemed titles like Truckin', Street Rodder, and HOT BIKE can track their DNA 40 years to Street Chopper Magazine. But that's the boring part. This might sound self-important, but this magazine did for modified motorcycles what Hot Rod magazine did for modified cars two decades prior: Street Chopper gave chopper fans a place to swap ideas and buy parts. It also made heroes of ordinary guys. Sure the mainstream magazines acknowledged chops, but mainly out of curiosity. You have to remember that the only biker-specific rag to that point was Ed Roth's CHOPPERS Magazine. But it was more culture oriented, the features were pretty light, and it completely lacked tech. Anyway, the only thing you could buy from it was patches, pictures, and decals. Street Chopper, on the other hand, was literally the marketing end of AEE Choppers. AEE if you didn't know is largely credited as the first chopper parts mass manufacturer. Prior to it, builders created choppers by modifying OEM parts and making the rest from scratch. Street Chopper offered feature bikes for ideas, tech stories to show how to do them, and AEE part numbers for ready orders. In that sense their relationship was necessary; each relied on the other.But what's really important about this little rag is how it got there. It's a yarn about hot rods, chopped bikes, wild animals for pets, jet planes, high-stakes gambling, hookers, and company-funded boob jobs, just to name the subjects fit to print. We know this because most of the people responsible for it are still around. But to make this story interesting, the first person we're going to introduce you to isn't. We'd like you to meet the late Thomas Michael McMullen. >The Man >the Myth >McMullenThe subject of Tom's early life probably isn't interesting, but you should probably know it anyway. He was born in Ohio. He spent his Navy service in a submarine, and upon discharge he moved to Southern California-Lynwood to be specific, the place where he met the second guy you should meet, Jim Clark. Jim is important for several reasons. They met in 1959 and over the years Jim played key roles: best friend, confidant, bodyguard, crony, alibi, shill, and cleanup man. He held various positions at Tom's companies: vice president, general manager, and managing editor just to name a few. And he's absolutely essential because the guy remembers everything to an alarming degree. "I have a tape recorder in my head..." he admitted, "...and it doesn't have an off switch." Tom got a degree at Compton College which led to a job at Beckman Instruments where he met Carl Sulkey. Together they started a little side business in 1963 called Automotive Electronics Engineering. "The shop didn't do all that well," Jim remembered. "He got some jobs and wired some cars. But Tom and I both knew Tex Smith from the L.A. Roadsters."
