Second Philippine-made solar car launched

Following the resounding success of SINAG, the Philippines' first solar car, the Philippine Solar Car Society now launches SIKAT, proving the Filipino's capability to lead in solar power technology. The design and construction of the SIKAT solar car was undertaken by a dedicated group of faculty and students from the Mechanical Engineering and the Electronics and Communications Engineering departments of De La Salle University-Manila, in partnership with the Philippine Solar Car Society, Inc. Both SINAG and SIKAT have bodies made out of carbon fiber in order to be as light as possible to achieve a higher running speed required in competition. The cars' top surfaces are covered with solar cells from Sunpower that are manufactured in Laguna, Philippines, and exported to other countries. SIKAT is set to travel across the Philippines starting January. Partnering with the PSCS are sponsors De La Salle University, Ford Motor Co. Philippines, Motolite, Pilipinas Shell and Sunpower.

Oriental-Motolite receives award from Isuzu Phils.

Recognizing its reliability as an OE (original equipment) supplier for local automotive manufacturing companies, Oriental-Motolite Marketing Corporation was the recipient of a "Zero-Delay" Award from Isuzu Philippines Corporation. The award was given during the Isuzu Supplier Conference and Christmas Party held last Nov. 20, at Manila Southwoods in Carmona, Cavite. This is the second consecutive year that Motolite has received the "Zero-Delay" Award for its excellent delivery performance. The Honda City is the country's subcompact sedan of choice not only for the motoring critics but the general public as well. Winning back-to-back recognition from two premier award-giving bodies, the introduction of the 3rd generation City early this year was a ground-breaking treat for the industry. SPEED Reaches Multi-Year Agreement On FIA Formula One World ... - Yahoo Finance

Posted: 21 Dec 2009 11:58 AM PST

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--SPEED and Formula One Management have reached an agreement to extend a relationship that dates back to 1996, the network's first full season on the air. SPEED will continue to offer its long-running live coverage of the FIA Formula One World Championship, including live coverage of qualifying and practice sessions.

"The global Formula One fan base is one of the most passionate in all of motor sports," said SPEED President Hunter Nickell. "In America, fans gather at all hours of the morning -- with races coming in from places like Malaysia, Singapore and Monaco -- to watch SPEED and cheer their favorite drivers and constructors. We look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship with these fans, both on air and through SPEEDtv.com."

"I've been on pins and needles waiting for this new agreement, and I've lost track of how many questions I've answered from our viewers regarding what the future holds, whether we'll see much of our colleague Peter Windsor in his new role as a team boss, and so much more," said Bob Varsha, the longtime SPEED voice of Formula One. "Anyone who was a part of the paddock fun at the old USGP at Indy knows that our fans are smart, loyal and vocal. I look forward to trying to give them what they expect on grand prix weekends for years to come. "

SPEED began covering F1 racing in 1996 with delayed race broadcasts, moving to live coverage in 1997. Beginning in 2010, SPEED also will have on-line clip usage rights from F1.

"We are delighted with the ability to offer Formula One video clips online at SPEEDtv.com" said Kevin Annison, VP Digital & Interactive Media for SPEED. "Acquiring broader Formula One on-line rights was important to SPEED as it is one of the most popular sections of the site. As the U.S. home to F1, we look forward to marrying these new video rights with SPEEDtv.com's excellent Formula One coverage, enhancing our article pages, photo galleries, expert commentary and race series editorials every race weekend."

Four F1 races will air on FOX this season with the SPEED on-air team calling the action. Those four races, which will be consecutive events, have yet to be named.

Varsha already is expecting big things from the 2010 season, which begins March 14 with the Bahrain Grand Prix:

"Every season we think nothing could possibly top the previous one," Varsha said. "But despite three straight world championships that came down to the final race, followed last year by the unlikely triumph of Jenson Button and Brawn GP, I think 2010 will be even better. We'll have the biggest field of cars since the '90s, so knockout qualifying will be crazier than ever. Three new teams, including one from here in the USA, new tracks, new rules, a new points system, no refueling, narrower front tires, the return of the Canadian GP and, we are told, the return of Michael Schumacher! What more can we ask?"

India needs its innovative edge

Our Bureau

Chennai, Dec. 21

Technological innovation in Indian industry could suffer if faculty in academic institutions here do not interact with their peers as much as they should, according to Mr James E. Smith, SAE President and Chairman of the Board, SAE International.

Mr Smith who was in Chennai last week to participate in the mobility congress organised by SAE India the largest affiliate of SAE International, feels the faculty is not publishing as much as they should be.

That is often an indication they are not 'interacting with their peers' and that could hit their ability to keep track of technological developments, says Mr Smith who is also the Professor and Director, Center for Industrial Research Applications, West Virginia University.

India has to 'leapfrog current technology' and make available its own solutions "that is where all the money is," he says.

The country which has emerged as a manufacturing hub 'needs its own breakthroughs'. India has to be careful. It is good at copying, improving and cheaper delivery but risks losing the edge in innovation. Several countries have this problem, he said.

Dr V. Sumantran, Executive Vice Chairman, Hinduja Automotive, said that India has demonstrated its capability in innovation but more is needed. Take the Tata Nano, he points out. It may be a low cost car but high technology has gone into it to 'achieve that new cost paradigm'. India's two-wheelers are more fuel-efficient and cleaner burning than motorcycles anywhere else in the world. "When it comes to innovating around cost Indian companies are doing well right now," he said.

But we need to take on new areas for innovation, he said. For instance, there is a lot of technology development and application in the automotive industry, including car-to-car communication. Standards need to be developed for such application, he said.
