Yet luxury sales are picking up.

Anne Arundel County has remained somewhat insulated from the economic turmoil and there still are six-figure earners who can afford to spend more this holiday. For guys, that translates to lifting their spirits with "big boy toys."

While finely tuned yachts are a local emblem of the well-to-do, there are bothersome details associated with ownership. Those who want instant gratification without stress might prefer another option.

Head out on the highway

Row upon row of jewel-toned motorcycles spill across the showroom floor of Harley-Davidson/Buell of Annapolis. The Hudson Street showroom, the biggest in the state, also boasts a display of accessories and clothing featuring the Harley-Davidson brand.

"A Harley bike is truly a 'toy,' " General Sales Manager Aaron Joyner said. "As opposed to an automobile, no family of three buys a motorcycle."

Starting at $6,999, there is an array of sportsters, light touring bikes, soft tails and cruisers priced up to $20,000.

However, top-end custom models like the Screaming Eagle from Harley's Custom Vehicle Operations subdivision are held dear. The Screaming Eagle is one of four Ultra Classics popularly referred to as "hogs" that are highly accessorized. Prices start at $25,300 and go up to $35,999.

As for accessories, anything chrome is popular. So is clothing. The company has its own designer label and additional brands including H-D Ink, which specializes in wearable art T-shirts. It also has an exclusive licensing agreement with Marvel Comics for merchandise featuring characters like Spider-Man and Captain America.

Top-end leather jackets retail for $625 with matching leather pants at $400. For winter riding, battery-heated gloves for $150 complement jackets, vests and underpants from $200 up. Helmets can be plain, starting at $69 or flashy up to $275.

Hard hit by the recession nationally, business remained steady at Harley-Davidson/Buell of Annapolis thanks to its advantageous location near Washington, D.C., officials said.

"We've been No. 1 in our district of 14 dealerships for the past 31/2 years," General Manager Bill Phillips said.

Relaxing at home

Bigger is better when it comes to big-screen TVs. For sports fans, a home theater with cushy recliners provides a viewing experience much more comfortable than a stiff theater seat.

Stansbury AV in Millersville, an independent, family-owned business, offers top-of-the-line audio/visual equipment and specializes in the installation and maintenance of media centers and home theaters. Its sizeable Anne Arundel and Baltimore County customer base helped the company mitigate the recession.

Owner Richard Ingram said the perfect home theater is a designated room featuring an overhead front projector that beams images onto a wall-mounted screen measuring 80 to 160 inches. Accessories include leather theater chairs with dual cup holders, high quality speakers and sophisticated remotes.

But that type of at-home luxury comes at a price. The complete package with projectors ranges from $1,900 to $10,000, screens $500 and up, and theater chairs are typically priced between $599 and $1,999.

A man and his car

As always, dynamic, stylish automobiles are in demand. What guy wouldn't like to sport around town in a sleek 2010 Jaguar XK or XKR coupe or convertible? Mileage is 15 city, 23 highway, but the cars are fast. At Annapolis Jaguar/Land Rover, the base price for an XK is $82,105 and the least expensive XKR coupe in stock is $93,700.

The rugged outdoorsman might prefer a hardy Range Rover Sport or full-sized Range Rover to navigate rough terrain. They range from $80,000 to more than $100,000.

Annapolis Jaguar/Land Rover has weathered the recession well, said sales staff member Robert Carter.

"In fact, Land Rover had one of its best years with sales strong starting in April," he said. "We've found that people in high-income brackets used to buying these types of vehicles are more diligent about spending but, if they need one, they'll get it."

The modernistic architecture of the Porsche of Annapolis building at 20 Hudson St. in Annapolis is the perfect showcase for a selection of automotive gems appealing to big boys lured by precision and speed. Showroom models include Porsche 911s, Boxsters and Caymans ranging in price from $55,000 to $105,000 and the Cayenne sport utility vehicle, which can run to $145,000.

Some, including the more expensive 911 Turbo Carrera or four-door Panamera, which sell for $145,000 to $150,000, are a little more scarce, said Mike Maurer, sales and leasing consultant.

"There is a waiting list because Porsche cut back on production," he said. "We dealers are worried whether we're going to have enough product."

Mauer added that, with the stock market up and leading indicators yielding some good news, sales have been very encouraging since August.

Rack 'em up

Would-be Minnesota Fats or executives looking for an addition to their game rooms might favor an upscale pool table. Home and Co. on West Street carries top-of-the-line tables and other game-room furnishings.

The store offers an eclectic mix of home theater equipment, pool tables, custom bars, authentic jukeboxes and pinball machines, electronic games, poker tables, artwork and photographs.

On a recent Saturday, a middle-aged couple sealed the deal on a Connelly Prescott pool table priced within the $3,000 to $5,000 range attractive to most homeowners. But there also is a market for limited-edition tables retailing for between $25,000 and $70,000 such as the Zanzibar Intercontinental, store officials said.

Home and Co. Owner Jerry Sigler said there's an upside to the economic downturn.

"Because of depressed home values and sales, many people are remodeling rather than moving," he said. "They're redoing game rooms, club basements and home theaters and that's been good for us."

Riyadh Car sales in Saudi Arabia, the Gulf's largest automobile market, are expected to jump over 30 per cent from around 676,000 in 2010 to 880,000 by 2013 as the Kingdom remains economically and commercially resilient against the global downturn.

The kingdom remains the largest market in the Middle East and fifth in the world for auto parts, accessories, service, and garage equipment.

Held under the patronage of Minister of Transport, Dr Jobarah Al Suraisry, the show opens today and will simultaneously run until December 16 at the newly-built Riyadh Exhibition Centre.

"The past months saw Saudi's automobile sector managing more than 2 billion-riyal growth in car sales amidst the global slowdown... PM wants company to draw up a dynamic biz model - star.com.my

Posted: 12 Dec 2009 03:29 PM PST

PEKAN: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has suggested that DRB-Hicom Bhd come up with a more dynamic business strategy to ensure that it remained competitive.

The Prime Minister said the company must remain vibrant and not stagnant in its business operations.

"DRB-Hicom should draw up a business model to see to it that it remains competitive and move on to the next level for the next 25 years,'' Najib said in his speech at the company's 25th anniversary celebrations at the DRB-Hicom Automotive Complex here yesterday.

DRB-Hicom is one of the country's leading corporations, playing an integral role in the automotive manufacturing, assembly and distribution industry through its involvement in the passenger car and four-wheel drive vehicle market segment, the national truck project and the national motorcycle project.

Among others, the firm assembles foreign cars from Honda and Mercedes-Benz in Malaysia. Besides automotive concerns, the group's core business focuses are in the services and property and infrastructure sectors.

Najib, who is the Pekan MP, said the achievement and success of DRB-Hicom was crucial to the town's development.

"By having a current business strategy, it will spell good fortune not only for DRB-Hicom but also for Pekan and its people,'' he said.

Najib also said being the biggest employer in the area, DRB-Hicom provided about 2,200 job opportunities to Pekan folk.

"This has helped to reduce the migration of young people to big cities. Otherwise, Pekan would become a sleepy hollow," he said.

On Pekan's automotive industry, Najib said it had been a success story which everyone should be proud of as DRB-Hicom had grown to having capabilities of international standards.

"It is now a home to manufacturing facilities of various foreign brands such as Mercedes Benz, Isuzu, Mitsubishi and Suzuki. It even assembles Mercedes Benz's flagship, the S-Class,'' he said, adding that the Pekan automotive complex contributed about RM500mil in revenue annually in the form of excise duties and sales tax.

Alternative Fuel Technologies Receives Order From Shanghai Diesel ... - PR-USA.net

Posted: 12 Dec 2009 12:59 PM PST

Alternative Fuel Technologies, Inc. ( PINKSHEETS : AFTC), an innovator of clean energy fuel injection systems, announced today that it has received an order from Shanghai Diesel Engine Company ("Shanghai Diesel"), a leading manufacturer of diesel engines in the People's Republic of China ("China"), for twelve (12) dimethyl ether (DME) fuel feed pumps. Shanghai Diesel indicated the majority of the pumps will be used on DME-fueled buses operating in Shanghai, the nation's largest center of finance, commerce and transportation. The pumps are scheduled for deliveries over the next 90 to 120 days.

AFTC's first generation feed pump is in use throughout Europe and Korea. A second generation feed pump has been demonstrated and is undergoing final development. AFTC CEO James McCandless said that this second generation pump, now under development and testing, "Further improves performance and significantly lowers noise, making it ideal for public transportation systems, like buses, passenger cars and mid- to heavy trucks."

"Shanghai Diesel Engine represents the ideal customer to demonstrate the effectiveness of our pumps on public transpiration," said AFTC CEO James McCandless. "China represents an immense, emerging market for our low-cost, ultra-clean fuel injection parts and systems. As the nation invests billions of dollars into greener infrastructure projects, we foresee our relationship with Shanghai Diesel and other Chinese customers to expand in 2010," Mr. McCandless also stated.

A key component to China's 2008 stimulus plan calls for a $440 Billion investment in green energy in an effort to improve global energy security. Presently, China relies on coal-powered plants for about 75% of the nation's total energy needs. Industry analysts estimate that by 2050, coal reserves will decline to 30-50% of total energy consumption, as the country takes on a more diversified approach to energy consumption. By 2010, the nation expects to have 10% of all energy be from sustainable resources, like biomass, renewable energy and other combination sources.

About Shanghai Diesel Engine Company

Through its subsidiaries and associates, Shanghai Diesel Engine Company Limited primarily engages in the manufacture and sale of diesel engines, fuel injection pumps, and components of diesel engines. Shanghai Diesel Engine Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation (SAIC).

SAIC operates approximately 50 manufacturing plants in the Shanghai area. SAIC makes passenger cars, tractors, motorcycles, trucks, and buses. Through a joint venture with General Motors (GM), Shanghai General Motors makes Buicks and other GM cars for the Chinese market. Through Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company, a JV with Volkswagen, SAIC also makes the Lavida. The Company's other operations include car leasing, auto parts wholesale and retail, and financing. It has production facilities across China, as well as in Germany, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and the US. Other automotive companies owned by SAIC include Shanghai-Sunwin Bus Corporation; Shanghai-Huizhong Automotive Manufacturing and Shanghai-Xingfu Motorcycle.

About DME

DME is a new ultra-clean diesel fuel replacement that can be produced from abundant resources. These include natural gas, landfill methane, coal and biomass. At current oil prices, DME can be produced and distributed at less than 1/2 the cost of conventional fuel. When burned in a diesel engine, all soot emissions are eliminated and NOx emissions are lowered dramatically without the use of expensive exhaust aftertreatment devices.

About AFTC

Alternative Fuel Technology Inc. is the engaged in the design, development and prototype manufacturing of advanced fuel systems for use with a new alternative fuel -- dimethyl either (DME). AFTC has developed practical, low-cost fuel injection equipment for DME fueled vehicles. The Company sells complete DME fuel systems for testing and research purposes, in addition to retrofit systems that can be used with most diesel engines. The Company plans to launch a series production of DME fuel systems to the global automotive market by 2011. For more information, please visit http://www.altfueltechnology.com/
