Super Nats make U-turn - Salem News Online Posted: 03 Dec 2009 02:00 PM PST SALEM - The fifth annual Steel Valley Super Nationals will return to Quaker City Raceway after veering off to Canfield while the first annual Quaker City Weekend Cruise will share the same weekend of June 25-27 in downtown Salem next year. City officials including Mayor Jerry Wolford, Service Safety Director Steve Andres, Auditor Jim Armeni, Deputy Safety Director Greg Oesch and QCR owner Dan Swindell appeared during an informational meeting on Wednesday in city hall to make the announcement to 22 people in attendance. Corey Ward of Ward Core Promotions, owner of the SVSN, could not attend but sent a prepared press release. It will be the return to status quo except that Community Promotions, which put on the former after parties in town, is out as an official promoter. Ward Core Promotions broke from its announced plans to hold next years event at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The Stadium GM Superstore in Salem is the primary sponsor at the race track while Armeni said the city has "gotten several calls from people who want to be a sponsor ... the event does have to sustain itself." Local hot rodder and car owner Jim Bonfert said, "I think it can make a profit. The mayor is wise to have a line item for everything." Wolford said the budget line item, which is pending and council has balked at approving, is available for other events "we don't know about." Wolford expects two parades, one for classic show cars and one possibly for "super Harley-Davidson bikes." He said classic cars will be judged at the race track. Ward said crowd estimates from past events totaled 20,000 for the three days with over 2,000 hot rods, street machines, motorcycles and muscle cars. Next year's event will feature "people from all over the nation enjoying everything from cool cars to thrill shows." The event will also feature a performance marketplace, burnout competition, miss super nationals contest, family fun zone, main stage, food games, and more. Ward said, "The Mahoning and Columbiana (county) markets are hot spots for motor enthusiasts, and we look forward to working with the city of Salem and Quaker City Raceway as they host this premier automotive event." "We look forward to local organizations and interested citizens becoming a part of a citywide summer celebration," Wolford said, "we really want to make this a community event." He said all the money from advertising, sponsors and promotional items will "run through the city books." In September, the city administration decided to go its own way and take over the after party and Ward Core Promotions, which said it was not advised of any problems regarding that event, announced it was taking the SVSN to Canfield. At Tuesday's city council meeting, Mike Grimstad, who owns the Community Promotions company with Barb Weikart-Kudor which promoted the downtown after parties in past events, said they were back in business after learning that Ward Core Promotions had a "long-term agreement" with Quaker City Raceway. On Wednesday, Swindell said he and Ward signed a one-year contract for 2010 "for different reasons." He added, "We came together at the 11th hour and we came together for a fifth year." Both Wolford and Andres were surprised by Grimstad's announcement but after noting the city may own the drag strip, which it is trying to buy for industrial expansion, they were silent. After Tuesday's meeting, Grimstad said there will be an event. "We will run the after party," he said, adding it will be held on whatever weekend the Steel Valley Super Nationals is held. "Call it what you want, a line in the sand," Grimstad said, "it's our event. To just steal it from us, that's not going to happen." Armeni said Wednesday, "Grimstad is not involved with this" and Wolford said, "They have their own event. All I can say is the city will put on its event on our property for three days." Andres he couldn't pay $11,000 for police overtime and "have a private company walk away with the profits ... I think things are going to work out." Andres said he wants all the bills paid and will be "extremely happy if it makes a profit ... we've run the numbers." Bonfert said, "It's good for Salem, it's good for my sport. I'm in all the way with this." Wolford and Andres are looking for volunteers and ideas. Anyone interested can call city hall at 330-3324241. Sons of Anarchy Gets Third Season - Coming Soon! Posted: 03 Dec 2009 05:27 PM PST FX has announced that the network has ordered a 13-episode third season for "Sons of Anarchy" to premiere in September 2010. Here's the press release: Tuesday's 90-minute season two finale of FX's critically acclaimed drama Sons of Anarchy was cable's number-one program for the night, delivering 4.33 million total viewers and 2.99 million Adults 18-49. It was also the top-rated show on television in the 10:00 PM time period among Men 18-49 (1.92 million) and Men 18-34 (1.09 million), beating all three broadcast networks. The episode was the most-watched ever for Sons, surpassing its season two premiere (4.29 million total viewers). On the heels of its stellar performance this season, FX President and General Manager John Landgraf announced that the network has ordered 13 episodes for the show's third season, which is scheduled to begin in September 2010. Creator/Executive Producer Kurt Sutter reached a deal on a two-year extension to continue his services as showrunner/writer on Sons. All series regulars are in place to return next season. Sons of Anarchy is produced by Fox 21 and FX Productions. In addition to taking cable's top spot Tuesday among total viewers, Adults 18-49, Men 18-49 and Men 18-34, the season finale, written and directed by Sutter, was also number one in delivery of Adults 18-34 (1.57 million), Women 18-49 (1.06 million), Adults 25-54 (2.77 million), Men 25-54 (1.71 million), and Women 25-54 (1.06 million). For its 13-episode second season, Sons averaged 3.67 million total viewers and 2.56 million Adults 18-49, which represented respective gains of +66% and +75% versus season one averages. Sons of Anarchy is basic cable's top scripted series for 2009 in delivery of Adults 18-49 and Men 18-49. During its 13-week run, the second season of Sons of Anarchy was television's #1 series in the Tuesday 10:00 PM time period in average delivery of Adults 18-34, Men 18-34 and Men 18-49 (BROADCAST and CABLE). "The success of Sons of Anarchy is very gratifying and the show has become a bona-fide hit," said Landgraf. "The critics have recognized Sons as one the best series on television, and the show has earned its place alongside FX's great drama series The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me and Damages. Creatively, this season was spectacular and all credit goes to Kurt and the incredible cast led by Katey Sagal, Charlie Hunnam and Ron Perlman." Sutter said, "This has been a wonderful ride and we're just getting started. I'm really proud of the work by our incredible cast and crew. The response this season from the fans and critics has been terrific and I can't wait to get back to the writer's room and start on season three." With the one-two punch of the Son of Anarchy finale and the broadcast premiere of Live Free or Die Hard, FX was the number-one ranked network on basic cable for the night in primetime (8-11 PM) in delivery of Adults 18-49 (2.15 million) ahead of #2 ranked ABC Family (1.38 million) by +56%. FX will air encore telecasts of the Sons season two finale on Thursday, December 3 at midnight, Friday, December 4 at 11:00 PM ET/PT, and on Sunday, December 6 at 11:00 PM ET/PT.
Starring Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal and Ron Perlman, Sons of Anarchy is an adrenaline drama with darkly comedic undertones that explores a notorious outlaw motorcycle club (MC) and its desire to protect its livelihood while ensuring that their simple, sheltered town of Charming, California remains exactly that: charming. The Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club must confront threats from drug dealers, corporate developers, hate groups and overzealous law officers. Behind the MC's familial lifestyle and legally thriving automotive shop is a ruthless and illegally thriving arms business. This content has passed through fivefilters.org. |
Faculty crunch plagues Panjab University - Tribune Posted: 03 Dec 2009 12:12 PM PST 'Paa' generates interest in medical fraternity Panchkula, December 3 The disease, which is very rare, has a reported incidence of about 1 in 4-8 million newborns. "While no such case was reported in the PGI, Chandigarh, since I joined the institute 28 years ago, I came across one case abroad during a study tour," said Professor Sunit Singhi, head, paediatric medicine. Balki, director of the movie, however, deserves applause for the make-up of the central character, suffering from the disease, as it is no different from the patients with the disease, he added. A newborn suffering from the disease starts ageing fast. A majority of them complete their aging process going through the symptoms of old age within 13 years, said Dr Singhi. The hair and tooth loss is on similar pattern in such children as is observed in people with old age. However, one of the interesting factors in such patients was observed that they do not suffer from some diseases related with old age like diabetes, he added. Similar were the views of Dr Dheeraj Khurana, Associate professor, Neurology. "In a career of 20 years, I am yet to come across such a patient, he said. In fact there may be only a few medical experts who would have got a chance to examine such patients in the country, he said. A majority of such patients die when they reach their teens. However, there were instances in the world when the patients even crossed the age of 20, he said, adding that the scientists were working globally on the disease, particularly so that it might reveal clues about the normal process of ageing. Dr Viaks Sharma, who is launching a special campaign over genodermatoses on Friday at National Skin Clinic in the MDC, Panchkula, said there were a lot of cases of various genodermatoses and people were becoming aware of them like the one with the release of movie "Paa", which depicts one of the genodermatoses progeria, said the dermatologist. Progeria signs include tightening and binding down of skin, growth failure, loss of body fat and hair, aged looking skin, cardiovascular diseases and stroke, said Dr Sharma. About progeria
